The 2025 Disc Golf World Championships ended up being a thriller in both the men's and women's fields. And the biggest headline absolutely has to be "Congratulations, Ohn Scoggins."
The 44-year-old Scoggins birdied the 18th hole on the final day to force a playoff with 15-year-old IIda Lehtomaki. And then, after Lehtomaki's approach on the first playoff hole went out-of-bounds, Scoggins sank a par putt to win her first major championship.
It's a triumphant accomplishment for Scoggins. She somehow stayed close to the top of the leaderboard each day, and then shot a -5 in the final round to force a playoff.
Scoggins is a perennial bright light in professional women's disc golf. She grew up in Laos, and didn't start playing disc golf until she was 30. But her tenacity and talent eventually brought her all the way to the pro disc golf tour. And in her career she's gained a lot of fans simply because of her very genuine, open-hearted playing style.
Scoggins brings a very cheerful presence to disc golf. Consider her throw in the fourth round of the 2022 Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship. She faced a long approach over water to reach the 5th hole. Scoggins threw a hard flex forehand that started out over the water but didn’t quite make it back. Her disc splashed into the lake, but then it somehow skipped up and kicked onto the green. In the video of the throw, Scoggins can be seen shaking her head in happy disbelief.
Fans love that kind of vulnerability. It's hard not to root for someone who wears their heart on their sleeve.
In the case of the 2025 World Championships, Scoggins nailed plenty of clutch putts. And she stayed close to the top of the leaderboard throughout the tournament.
Her accomplishment is doubly sweet considering that Scoggins is 44 years old, and has already won an over-40 World Championship.
IIda Lehtomaki is a great player as well. And she's only 15, which means there's plenty of great disc golf in her future.
A special note, too, that Ella Hansen shot a stunning -12 on the final day to tie for third with Henna Blomroos. Hansen is another great player whose talent could hopefully bring her a major championship in the near future.
On the men's side, Gannon Buhr won his first World Championship (and fourth major championship overall). At this point, Buhr is the best in the world on the men's side. He has the talent to win on any given weekend.
The competition on the men's side was riveting throughout the tournament, though. On the final day, both Aaron Gossage and Niklas Anttila were right there with Buhr. And Sullivan Tipton, Anthony Barela, and Ezra Aderhold also figured closely.
Impressive, too, is that Paul McBeth shot a -12 on the final day to vault into the top ten.
Overall, just a thrilling five-day span of top-flight disc golf.
NOTE:A record 10,000 spectators in attendance on the final day.
